The authorities of an airport in the Galapagos Islands confiscated 185 baby turtles. They were found wrapped in plastic in a red suitcase. It happened on Sunday when officials scanned the suitcase that was on its way to Guayaquil, the port city of Ecuador.

Unfortunately, ten of them were found dead, and the rest were sent to a special medical center for further care by specialists. And according to the latest data, five more turtles have died. This happened, most likely, due to stress after being separated from their natural habitat. It is believed that the turtles were removed from the nests on the island of Santa Cruz. Baby turtles were found in terrible condition and with very low weight. Now, all important data regarding the size and weight of each turtle are collecting, in order to better estimate their current condition.

Meanwhile, a police officer was arrested for affirmed smuggling. He will be charged with wildlife crimes, which are punishable by up to three years in prison.

The Galapagos giant tortoises are the largest living turtles in the world and are found only in the Galapagos Islands. Now only 20-25 thousand wild turtles live on the islands.
