EFFECTS OF OZONE DEPLETION
The effects of ozone depletion are devastating for humans, animals, and nature. Some of which we are already experiencing in our current world. The ozone layer is a vital and important part of the earth’s atmosphere that is there to protect the negative and harmful effects of what lays on the other side. The ozone depletion and climate change are directly linked with one another and thus our everyday actions are too linked with the numerous and negative consequences of ozone depletion. Our entire existence and the way we live is all based on the state of the world we live in yet the state of an important part, the ozone layer has been negatively affected and thus those negative effects will be transferred into our everyday lives and the lives of those around us.
HOW DOES THE OZONE LAYER AFFECT LIFE ON EARTH?
The effects of ozone layer depletion are complicated yet very harmful to the totality of life on earth. The main purpose of the ozone layer is to absorb all the ultraviolet radiation which is extremely harmful to humans and the planet. These rays while they cannot be seen with our eyes their effects can be felt and thus it is extremely important that the ozone layer is strong enough to take these in and stop them from bouncing back and hitting life on earth. Why is the ozone layer important to living things? Ozone depletion is a very worrying thing as it is a direct effect on all living organisms and its ability to absorb damaging radiation is imperative to living life.
HOW DOES OZONE DEPLETION IMPACT HUMAN HEALTH?
The ultraviolet radiation that is supposed to be absorbed by the ozone layer can cause some devastating effects on human health. These effects include the increased risk of contracting skin cancers, severe immune deficiency disorders, and eye cataracts which can severely damage one’s life and even cause death. The more UV radiation that is not absorbed by the ozone layer the more likely we as humans are to contract these types of diseases and disorders. The effects that ozone depletion has on nature is to an effect on humans and the consequences will definitely be felt as all organisms from the tiniest of plants to the greatness of mankind can be negatively affected as the ozone depletes.
WHAT IMPACT DOES OZONE DEPLETION HAVE ON PLANT AND ANIMAL LIFE?
Ozone depletion can cause a very large amount of damage to all plant life. When the harmful radiation that has failed to be absorbed due to ozone depletion hits plants it damages their leaves by burning plant tissue and thus reduces the plants’ chances of survival and reproduction. The way that plants grow and form may be altered and skewed as a result of ozone depletion meaning these plants will have a defect and not be able to carry out their duties as they are meant to. These effects will in turn affect the animals that feed off these plants and can often cause diseases as well as a major disruption of the natural cycle. Animals are too affected by ozone depletion especially marine animals where it has been found that UV radiation damages the growth and developmental process in fish, shrimp, and many other marine animals. This is because Phytoplankton which forms the base of the food web in the marine ecosystems is affected by the UV radiation meaning there is less production resulting in lower survival chances for the animals that rely on it.
WHAT EFFECTS CAN OZONE DEPLETION HAVE ON THE ENVIRONMENT?
The environmental effects of ozone depletion include humans, animals, plant life, and basically all the living organisms that makeup life on earth. As this atmospheric layer slowly becomes thinner and thinner more and more harmful UV rays are trapped in the Earths surface and as the effects of these rays disturb plant life and animal life that creates a break in the cycle that should be flowing continuously and easily and once this cycle is disturbed in any magnitude it affects everything involved like a domino affect. These effects can lead to the unfortunate loss of plant species and thus will affect soil erosion, water loss, and oxygen production which are all involved in this important cycle.
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WITHOUT THE OZONE LAYER?
If the ozone were to disappear completing the effects on our planet would be absolutely devastating. All plant species would die and then herbivore animals will have no food to eat and then die too, followed by all other animals who will have no prey to catch, humans will contract a variety of skin cancers at an alarming rate if they even live to that point as they would have no food sources and as large trees collapse oxygen would be short. So as you can see without the ozone layer there wouldn’t be any life at all, that is why it is so important that we look after our one and the only world and make an effect to control our contribution to global warming and in turn climate change and the many effects that follow with it.
