GMO AND ENVIRONMENT
So are genetically modified foods destroying our environment? Well in many ways, yes and there are many harmful effects of GMOs on the environment too. while we receive these genetically modified foods at our grocery store chains the real effect is not as much on our health as it is on the health of the environment as this is where it all begins. Changing the natural system of crops growing is harmful towards the natural cycle the environment depends on and once this is destroyed it is almost impossible to rectify which means it will rely on the recreation of genetically modified plants to reproduce.
GMO NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
The environmental risks of GMOs include
The use of genetically modified crops has some very negative impacts on organisms, soils, and water ecosystems. In the process of creating GMOs, the use of herbicides is strongly implemented into our soils which in turn reduces the diversity of the agricultural systems which can lead to limited habitat and limited food resources for many animal species and important organisms. It has led to massive declines in many species of animals which play important roles in the food chain and the entire ecosystem of the animal kingdom. For example, the Monarch butterfly population has declined by over 90 percent within the past twenty years as they have lost thousands of acres of the land in which they call their habitat. The use of herbicides kills various plant species, one, in particular, being milkweed which is the plant that butterflies need in order to breed, without them they cannot expand their population and eventually will become extinct. Pollen, many other plant sources have now been deemed toxic and unusable as a result f the GMO process meaning many animals have lost the majority of their food and shelter resources.
Contamination is a large negative effect produced by genetically modifying organisms, the contamination from genetically modified plants also creates some serious ecological, social, and economic impacts. This is especially present in the variety of species of wild weed type crops that may not serve a purpose to the creation of GMOs but serve an important role in our ecosystems. This contamination also makes its way into non-GMO crops, other food sources, and the intricate world of organic farming in which they suffer the negative consequences of the creation of GMOs.
As you can see there are a variety of risks that GMOs pose to the environment, the use of herbicides is a strong factor in creating these issues as they cannot be retained to just the area they are used in and thus spread to around and contaminate even those not involved, this also eventually leads to its effect on us and overall human health and disease.
