How Many Plastic Bags Are Used Each Year?

Before we can start speaking about the plastic bag ban and what it will entail, let’s dive a little deeper into why this ban needs to happen in the first place. The plastic bags’ effect on the environment is tragic and devastating and causes a huge threat not only to the environment but to the lives of animals, marine life, and even human health. It is estimated that over 500 billion plastic bags are used every single year, which is equivalent to over one million every single minute. The major impact that this amount of plastic has on the environment is astronomical and mostly comes from the fact that plastic is non-biodegradable meaning that it doesn’t decompose and stays on the Earth forever. The harmful toxins and chemicals in plastics are eventually broken down into tiny fragments known as microplastics that are then released into the atmosphere and into our water streams where it kills thousands upon thousands of marine life species every year. Plastic bags can also cause blockages in sewage pipes, contaminate drinking water and reduce soil fertility, and thus the effects of plastic bag ban will be aimed at reversing the devastating consequences that have already occurred to our Earth in an aim to try to protect and conserve the remainder of our planet.
