Everything You Need to Know about Plastic Pollution, Its Effects, and Solutions
Unfortunately, there are many effects of plastic pollution on human health and a lot of scientific research has recently gone into this very topic as morAs many of you probably already know the world’s plastic pollution problem is becoming a major issue for our planet, from our lands to seas and everything in between, the devastating effects of plastic pollution have already been experienced.
Humans’ one-time plastic use, in particular, has not only created irreversible pollution to our oceans and lands but also towards human health and global warming in general. As we have begun to release these effects the world has taken a more sustainable and environmentally approach to life, slowly starting to change their behaviors and exchange harmful products for biodegradable versions. This is one of many plastic pollution articles in which we will be discussing why plastic pollution is so negative, the effects it is having as well as the solutions we can make in order to resolve these major global issues.
What Is Plastic Pollution?
In simple terms plastic pollution basically occurs when a large amount of plastic is accumulated on the Earth’s surface, this could include anything from water bottles, plastic bag, good containers, and even straws. This accumulation eventually fills up our landfills and enters into our water streams, and because plastic is non-biodegradable the effects last a lifetime and often end up killing many marine species as well as bringing pollution into the atmosphere, causing catastrophic events and contributing massively to global warming and climate change.
Why Is Plastic Pollution a Problem?
There are many reasons why plastic pollution is a major concern for the globe, this is because it does not just affect one element of our lives, but actually many including, oceans, marine life, humans and human health as well as our environment and our atmosphere. There are many statistics on plastic pollution which include the fact that plastic is most commonly a one-time use product, meaning it is disposed of extremely quickly and thus used more frequently. The problem with this is that this amount of plastic has nowhere to go and eventually makes its way into our oceans and reportedly kills hundreds of thousands of marine animals each year as they ingest these plastic objects. Plastic also releases toxic chemicals during its breakdown process which are eventually released into the atmosphere affecting the ozone layer as well as the human health system.
How Does Plastcpollution Affect Humans?
More and more people were feeling the symptoms of plastic intoxication. Plastic pollution actually affects human health from the beginning of the manufacturing process right until the point it is thrown into the pin. This occurs when it is extracted and transported because of the release of toxic substances into their which can cause impairments to the immune systems and even cause diseases such as cancer. The process of refining and production, packaging, waste management, microplastics, and the degradation of plastic products all cause dangerous threats to human health.
Ocean Plastic Pollution
Plastic pollution in the ocean has by far the most devastating effects of all especially on marine life within it. Great lakes plastic pollution, pollution in some of the biggest oceans, and even the pollution on small streams and rivers are cause for concern for many highly acclaimed researchers. So how many marine species are harmed by plastic pollution each year? Over 100 million marine animals die from plastic waste every single year, let that sink in for a moment. This does not even account for the 1 million seabirds that are also killed because of our plastic pollution. This is because marine animals often land up ingesting the plastic in the oceans and because of the synthetic compounds found inside they are often killed and found with plastic products in their stomachs.
How to Stop Plastic Pollution
While we have seen the devastating effects plastic pollution can have we must not forget that there are solutions to plastic pollution that we can easily adopt into our daily lives. Some scientific solutions to plastic pollution include:
- Try not to buy disposable plastics
- Not buy water bottles and rather invest in a reusable bottle
- Avoid microbeads that are commonly found in many beauty and cosmetic products
- Cook more at home and void using plastic containers, cutlery, and straws
- Purchase second-hand items
- Use reusable shopping bags
- Buy from sustainable brands
These are just a few of the many ways to reduce plastic pollution in our own everyday lives, just these small changes can contribute to making a large difference.
Facts about Plastic Pollution
Here are some interesting facts about plastic pollution that can expand your knowledge on the fragile topic.
When did plastic pollution start?
Plastic pollution was first noticed during the 1960s
Plastic pollution by country
The top 3 countries experiencing the worst effects of plastic pollution are:
Does plastic ever biodegrade
Most plastics if not all do not biodegrade and often just split into tiny fragments known as microplastics.
Some other interesting plastic pollution facts include:
- In some countries using plastic is illegal
- 73 percent of beach litter is plastic
- 1 million plastic bottles are bought throughout the world every minute
- 2 million plastic bags are used every minute around the world
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, plastic pollution is only making things worse for us and our lives on Earth and it is our responsibility to change our ways in order to avoid experiencing even greater consequences on both our health, our environment, and the species within our world.
